The not so fun part about the digital age, is making things that change or just go away, pretty often. Sometimes it’s fun to make tangible things, that get used in real life.

When Andrew decided to start writing letters to his favorite creators on his vintage typewriter, he asked me to help him design a signature style and package that would distinguish the letter and the experience of reading it.

Andrew wanted a few different elements. He wanted an outer envelope, weather proof, and some pre-printed labels. He also wanted a sleeve for the actual letter. As we researched letter writing, and explored possibilities we decided to make a wax seal stamp to seal the inner envelope and a few different stamps for the letter and packaging layers.

I was inspired by this handwritten poem, signed with a traditional hanko stamp.

Andrew also wanted to include an introduction of sorts, to the letter itself as part of a larger project. He was planning to send letters to friends and family but also creative people he admired. He wanted the people who didn’t know him personally to be intrigued enough to open the letter. We decided to create an extra note, a “read me” that would prompt the reader to set aside some time to receive the words in the same spirit they were being shared.

This was such a fun project to be part of and watch evolve. Andrew ended up with a set of stationary and tools that would allow him to spend his creative energy on writing the letters and then package them easily.
